Gatwick
Gatwick is the second largest airport in the UK and the world’s busiest single runway airport.
How did we perform?
The growing popularity of low-cost carriers and their use of larger aircraft saw passenger numbers rise 4.7% to 34.4 million, with underlying revenues topping £285 million and underlying operating profit reaching £98 million. At the same time, new security measures put pressure on the airport and led to longer queues. This was the major reason for a drop in passenger satisfaction scores from 4.1 to 4.0 (5 = excellent; 1 = poor).
How will expansion help things?
The refurbishment of the airport continued apace as we worked to make the airport a more modern and enjoyable place to fly to and from. Glass-sided air bridges were installed providing better access and spectacular views across the airfield. In addition, a two-year project to redevelop the South Terminal arrivals hall was completed ahead of schedule and on budget. This provides a much larger and more pleasant space for arriving passengers and has improved the speed of baggage reclaim. Extensive refurbishment work also started on North Terminal’s short-term multi-storey car park.
A number of new retail outlets were opened, the World Duty Free North Terminal main store was extended and new eating and shopping areas were developed in the South Terminal, in response to customer feedback, providing more choice and a wider range of options.
