UK-wide regulations on cabin baggage: what you need to know

04 July 2006

Department for Transport (DfT) regulations limiting the size of cabin baggage come into force on 5 July 2006. UK airports and their airline partners have been asked by the DfT to ensure passengers adhere to these limits.

These restrictions limit the size of hand luggage allowed on board an aircraft. Carry on baggage should have a maximum length of 56cm, 45cm width and 25cm depth. These limits reflect internationally agreed standards.

Bags exceeding these limits cannot be carried on board your aircraft and must be checked-in. There is no limit to the weight or number of bags. *

These restrictions are designed to reduce security queuing times and improve safety on board aircraft.

It is important that passengers adhere to these limits. If your luggage exceeds the limits, you will be asked to return to check-in. This will delay you - and may mean you miss your flight.

Measuring gauges will be available at check-in, and throughout the terminal. If you are unsure, please ask a member of the airport’s security team, or your airline representative.

How the changes affect you
Passengers using check-in desks will have their cabin baggage checked for size.

Passengers using e-ticket machines should check their bag in the gauge adjacent to the machines, and internet check-in passengers should also ensure that they comply.

Any passengers found to have oversized baggage on arrival at the boarding card check before security will be required to return to check-in to have it placed in the hold.

* These restrictions relate to the size of carry on luggage. However, some airlines also restrict the number of bags allowed on board their aircraft. Some may also restrict the weight of carry on luggage. If in doubt, please contact your airline.

Baggage allowance
Baggage allowance varies between airlines and should be shown on your ticket. If you have any queries regarding hand or hold baggage allowances please contact your airline.

The maximum weight of an individual bag is 32kg (70lbs) or less. If your bag weighs more than this, you will be asked to repack your luggage into smaller bags. This does not affect your overall baggage allowance which is determined by your airline. Please check your allowances and the weight of your individual bags before you leave for the airport – this will save you time and any inconvenience. Please note this currently applies to Heathrow and Gatwick airports only.

Airlines have been directed by the British government to ask passengers specific questions about their luggage when they check in. Depending on which airline you are flying with, and to which destination, you may be asked more detailed questions.

Unusual items
Please inform your airline or handling agent about any outsize or unusual items of baggage well in advance of departure.
