Fire service
At all BAA's airports, the safety of our passengers, customers, staff and property is of paramount importance to us. As such, each of our six airports has its own fully equipped, fully regulated fire station on site, dedicated wholly to the individual airport it serves.
Our fire stations operate very much like off-airport fire services do. There is a special focus on aviation and aircraft rescue matters thanks to the structured training framework that all of BAA’s fire fighters undertake, and which plays a very important part in their career development and in BAA’s overall fire service. While full training is given to these new recruits, we also provide skills gap analysis and top-up training for the experienced applicants we take on board.
Each station is broken down into the following roles:
- Chief fire officer – overall control of BAA’s fire service
- Airport fire manager – controlling each individual airport station
- Operational station manager – taking charge of each shift
- Watch managers – providing day-to-day support, supervision and training
- Leading fire fighter – supervising the duty watch
- Fire fighters
Our shift patterns operate on 12-hour rosters, the majority of which are taken up with training. It's thanks to this fantastic training that we can provide some of the best opportunities for fire fighters in the UK.
