Surface transport
Did you know?
Aviation is attributable for 6% of the UK's total CO2 emissions.
Surface transport
Good surface access is integral to the success of our airports and reducing our environmental impact and is a key priority for both local and national stakeholders. As our airports grow, so too must the transport choices available to our passengers. This means a better mix of public transport, including bus, rail and tram.
For many passengers using our airports, road based transport – either bus or private car - will continue to be the predominant mode of transport. It is therefore vitally important that improved road access to our airports is provided if they are to continue to grow.
Without investment and commitment in these key areas our ability to attract passengers – and airlines - will diminish, and our already congested roads will stifle our potential for future growth.
Our approach
A key objective for all our airports is to increase the proportion of passengers and staff travelling to the airport by public transport, and to minimise the number of private vehicle movements. We work closely with all levels of government to develop, plan and help implement good surface access proposals and ensure that our plans are in line with the growth of the cities and regions they serve.
To that end, we set challenging, but achievable, mode share targets at each of our airports.
