Fire Service
Gary – Lead Fire-fighter, BAA Stansted
My shift starts at 7am, so when I arrive in the morning we’ll all have a briefing to outline what will be happening during the day ahead, and given any important information or instructions. Obviously if there’s any kind of emergency then we drop everything and go.
On a daily basis we carry out job training to practice our skills in a variety of scenarios which could include fire-fighting, rescue, first aid, driving and a wide range of other duties
Luckily we haven’t had a serious fire incident for a while but we are always prepared. Whenever we’re called out we have to remember that there are other aircraft moving around, so have to be vigilant too.
I really enjoy working in such a great team, as we have a good laugh, but we always understand that we have an important role to play. I think I like the job so much because not only do we get to have fun, keep fit but we’re also performing a life-saving service and with the additional benefit of career progression. I’ve never got up and thought “oh no, not that again”, as it really is a pleasure to come to work.
