Roly – Technical Management Centre Manager – IT Operations, BAA

My current responsibilities, involve looking after all the servers across the entire group, it seems a long way from where I started, as a part-time security guard in 1988. I started on a six-month contract in Terminal 1 at Heathrow that extended into a full-time role, and led to me taking on the in-house induction training for the airports security guards,

I then went on to work with one of our HR co-ordinators who was involved in recruiting security personnel. This was my first exposure to IT, and as my confidence in this area grew, I applied for a secondment as a business performance assistant. The role gradually allowed me to become more involved in looking after the telecoms. My first IT role was, supporting the purchasing system we use at Heathrow and I gradually took on bigger roles in IT.

The next step was taking on management responsibilities, starting as a team leader. In my current role I have 20 direct reports, including three supervisors. Having accomplished so much, I feel extremely loyal to BAA – and I can’t see myself wanting to move anywhere else.

Nick – IT Project Manager, BAA Heathrow

A big incentive for joining BAA was the variety of work offered on projects that cross a range of functions.

I’m involved in delivering a new taxi management system for Heathrow Airport - as Heathrow deals with about 3,000 taxis a day we need to ensure that all taxis are directed to the appropriate terminal.

A typical day might start in the taxi feeder park checking the overnight processes and system operation. I then cover any issues that have come up with our principal supplier and agents.

I have a high degree of responsibility, like being given the project budget but i receive a lot of support. It’s a self-sufficient role with minimal supervision and i enjoy getting out and about.
