Security
Awtar – Security Officer, Stansted
I’ve worked here for over five years and the people I work with are a great crowd. We’re doing a good job, making people feel secure coming through the airport. I’ve chosen to work an early shift – 05:00 until 14:00. It suits me better as I get to spend more time with my family, working four days on, two days off.
At a security post, we profile people coming through the gates, watching how they’re acting to see if anything seems abnormal. They’ll pass through the metal detector, and we’ll check a certain number of bags per day. We could find things like a replica gun or children’s toy guns which look real on the X-ray. Customer service is very important as we’re the first people the passengers see, so you have to give them the confidence to come to you with a problem. I love my job and, in all the time I’ve been here, I’ve only had one bad day.
Security Trainer
Georgina – Security Officer and Trainer, Heathrow
I’ve been a Security Officer for five years and, although I still really like the job, I’m also a trainer, as I was looking for a new challenge. I’ve seen both sides of the job as I joined the training team about two and a half years ago. New starters have six days classroom-based training and eight days’ hands-on training in the terminal. We go through all the procedures - body and bag search, loading and unloading baggage – supervising them and giving feedback. They also use the X-ray machine, checking for prohibited items. If they’re unsure, we’re there to support them. I really enjoy training as I like passing knowledge onto other people. If I wanted to develop my skills, my supervisor is there to support me. This role would suit someone with an enthusiastic, bubbly personality who can also be serious, as, after all we’re performing a vital public service.
