Government policy
In December 2003 the Government published its Future of Air Transport White Paper, which set out the UK's policy for sustainable aviation over the next 30 years. This was a crucial document for BAA and the future of aviation in the UK, concluding that new runways are needed in the South East. It advises that:
- Stansted should be the location for the first new runway
- An additional runway could be built at Heathrow, as long as environmental issues are resolved
- Land at Edinburgh and Glasgow will be safeguarded for possible future runways.
The White Paper also makes clear that there are environmental limits which must be respected and sets out a range of measures to address climate change, noise, air quality and surface transport.
In December 2006 the Government published a follow-up report giving details of progress made.
The Department for Transport (DfT) has now published the results of its environmental assessment showing that the environmental limits for a third runway at Heathrow can be met. For more information visit the DfT website.
The Government also sets out an integrated sustainable development strategy, which aims to achieve a productive economy and a just and healthy society in ways that protect and enhance the environment.
