Important forecourt information

Work is underway to re-design the forecourts at Gatwick South Terminal.

Passenger numbers at South Terminal are growing and so too are the number of  vehicles accessing the terminal Forecourts.

Our aim is to create a safer and cleaner environment for passengers and airport staff, promote public transport and ease congestion. In order to achieve this we are changing the way vehicles access the terminal.

The following changes have now been implemented to the forecourts in South Terminal.

What these changes mean for you?

Private vehicles
Private vehicles dropping off passengers will be directed to use the Lower Forecourt only. We are doubling the number of car park spaces on the Lower Forecourt to accommodate this move, including a special needs area.

Private vehicles picking up passengers will be directed to use Short Stay Car Park 3 (orange). A new tariff, which includes special needs parking in Short Stay Car Park 3 allows 15 minutes parking time at a cost of £1.

Express coaches and on airport car park buses
Will continue to use the Upper Forecourt to drop off and collect passengers awaiting onward travel.

Taxis
Gatwick Airport Limited licensed taxi hire  company, Checker Cars will continue to use the Upper Forecourt.  All other taxi operators will be directed to the Lower Forecourt to drop off, and pick ups will be from the Short Stay Car Park 3.

Car rental and official airport car valet
Will continue to be accessed via the Lower Forecourt.

Off-airport car park buses and hotel courtesy buses
Will be accommodated within the existing coach station which has just benefited from a £1.5 million investment programme to improve its facilities.

Why are we making these changes?

Improved safety

  • As we continue to manage our sustainable growth, we are determined to ensure that our forecourts are safe and secure for all users.  The changes will ensure the forecourts are used and managed in a more effective manner.
  • We have just completed a £26 million refurbishment programme of the Short Stay Car Parks, which include the provision of  safety features on the walkways and car park spaces. In addition we have improved the quality of service by completing a refurbishment programme of the lifts servicing the Car Parks from the Terminal.
  • Short Stay Car Park 3 is now a dedicated pick – up car park, providing a safe and secure area for passengers. We have also created designated seating areas and refreshment facilities for passengers within the car park, ensuring a more comfortable experience.
  • The passenger drop off bays will allow vehicles to park alongside the kerb, ensuring vehicles are not reversing into the flow of traffic to exit the Lower Forecourt.

Improved capacity and service

  • We are doubling the number of  spaces for private vehicles on the Lower Forecourt which will ease congestion.
  • The additional move of buses to the coach station will also improve congestion and safety.

Improved security

  • The safety and security of the airport for passengers and airport staff is our top priority.
  • A security barrier on the Upper Forecourt will be in place to ensure only those authorised vehicles are permitted access.
  • A no waiting policy for private vehicles will be strictly enforced.

Improving the environment

  • We are committed to promoting quality public transport options for our passengers and staff travelling to and from the airport, in favour of car journeys in order to reduce congestion and cut down on harmful emissions.
  • We are aware that we must continue to provide quality facilities for those who still wish to use private vehicles. We believe the changes to the Forecourts represent a balance between the two.
  • To support these changes there will be considerable improvement to the current signage for passengers and other airport users as they approach the South Terminal from the Welcome Roundabout, off the M23.
