How old is Southampton Airport?
Southampton Airport originates from 1910, when a local man, Eric Rowland Moon, made and tested his Moonbeam II aircraft on the north Stoneham Farm Meadows. This is the land that is now part of Southampton Airport.

When was the airport redeveloped?
BAA bought Southampton Airport in 1990. The new passenger terminal was opened by HRH, Prince Andrew, the Duke of York on 9 December 1994. The facilities took 56 weeks to complete at a cost of £27 million for the total site redevelopment. In 2001 BAA spent a further £8 million on re-developing the short-term car park into a multi-storey.

What are your current development plans?
Southampton Airport has redevloped the departure lounge at the cost of £5 million providing greater space and comfort for passengers. What does the airport do for the community?
Southampton Airport aims to work in partnership with its local communities and takes action wherever practically possible to ensure that it is a good neighbour. Find our more on how we work with the local community.

Do you have night flights?
As a result of the Flying Controls Agreement with Eastleigh Borough Council, Southampton Airport has no scheduled flights after 23:00 at night. Unscheduled aircraft movements are limited to a maximum of 10 per month (maximum of 100 a year) during night hours. Exceptions are allowed for emergency flights and some delayed scheduled aircraft. 

Departing or arriving flights are not permitted before 06:00 on weekdays and Saturdays or before 07:30 on Sunday mornings. The first and last flights operate well within the permitted hours of operation.

What is the economic value of the airport to the local region?
A 2004 study by the Geodata Institute at Southampton University concluded that the airport contributes £86.5 million per year to the local economy, playing an important role in local competitiveness and the economic development of the region. The airport is a major local employer, with over 1,200 people now working on-site, for one of 30 different companies.
