Heathrow is the UK’s only hub airport and an important economic asset. But today Heathrow is full and vulnerable to foreign competition.
Terminal 5 questions and answers

Terminal 5 is the springboard for our ambitious plans to upgrade and modernise London Heathrow Airport.
Its extra capacity will help cut congestion, and by relocating airlines at our other terminals we'll be able to cut transfer times for millions of connecting passengers.
We'll also be able to start work on replacing our ageing Terminals 1 and 2 with a brand new one, Heathrow East, whilst Terminals 3 and 4 will be extensively updated.
That will mean a better journey for every one of Heathrow's 67 million passengers a year.
The first passengers to use Terminal 5 arrived on British Airways flight BA026 from Hong Kong, early on Thursday 27 March 2008.
Terminal 5 is at the western edge of the airport, close to the M25 motorway and only 21 minutes from central London by the fastest rail link.
British Airways is the only airline to operate from Terminal 5. Most of its flights will move there (a few will use Terminal 3).
Terminal 5 consists of three buildings – the main terminal plus two satellites, Terminals 5B and 5C, linked by an automated transit system.
The stunning design, featuring glass walls and roof, was devised by the Richard Rogers Partnership (now Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners), creators of the Welsh Assembly building and the Pompidou Centre in Paris.
How was it built?
Sixty thousand people have helped build Terminal 5. During construction, 80,000 archaeological items were collected, 11 miles of baggage conveyor belt were installed, and two rivers were moved (complete with fish).
By 2012, most of our passengers will be travelling through terminals that aren’t even open today. That’s why we’re calling Heathrow a new airport for London.
